How creating art with an Art Therapist can help you feel more empowered.

San Diego Art Therapist Blog

This past year can be described in many ways, but one thing that stands out is the undeniable losses.  Many different types of losses. Loss of normalcy, loss of physical contact, loss of income and jobs, loss of large, gathered celebrations for weddings, anniversaries, and graduations. The loss of hopes and dreams, and the loss of many lives.

Feeling powerless is not uncommon in the face of loss.

The death of a loved one can be difficult to absorb.  It can leave a person feeling overwhelmed as they get caught in a storm surge of grief. Wave after wave crashes over them.  While death is part of life, it is often incredibly painful. While talk therapy can be extremely helpful, sometimes it can leave people feeling like a passive bystander, rather than an active participant. I know this to be true in my life and the lives of others who I have helped through their own losses.

What I have observed, working as an Art Therapist in San Diego is remarkable resiliency in the midst of grief.

As you are reading this, you too may be reflecting on the losses you and your family have experienced over this past year. Wondering how creating art with an art therapist could possibly help you feel more empowered.  My knowledge began with my own personal experience with an art therapist helping me more fully integrate and make meaning of the losses in my life. Later on, I chose to pursue helping others in the way I had been so greatly helped.

Creating art in Art Therapy while feeling powerless, testifies to your personal agency.

In the earlier years of my therapy career, I had the sacred experience of working with hospice patients and their family members.  To this day I have rich memories of the art created by adults and children in the context of art therapy sessions. I saw how making choices while grieving is an act of the will. It can overcome the inertia, and calm some of the anxiety that accompanies events beyond our control. Loss is subtractive in nature and we see what is missing or gone. Creating is additive in nature and we see the birth of something new.
